Summer School Day 15

1) Open and review satirical terms worksheet. This is shared in your google drive.

2) Watch video of modern day satire on TV. Link to Stephen Colbert show.

3) Jon Stewart on North Korea

4) Mike Royko's essay on guns.

5) Assignment:

Channel your inner Jonathon Swift/Mike Royko.  Pick a problem that you would like to satirize.

  • Jonathon Swift chose to write about poor Irish beggars.  
  • Stephen Colbert satirizes the gap between the wealthy and the poor.  
  • Mike Royko satirizes guns in the US by pretending to love guns.
Here are some possible topics you may want to write about but are not limited to.

  • Bullying
  • School Discipline
  • Immigration and illegal immigrants
  • Drugs
  • Crime
  • Alcohol - Drunk Driving
  • Divorce
Once your have chosen your topic come up with a satirical solution to your problem.  Remember, the key to satire is make it seem like you are serious about your solution.

Your paper should include at least 3 different satirical devices we have learned to include:

  • hyperbole
  • invective
  • inversion
  • irony
  • sarcasm
  • satire
  • understatement
Anytime you use any of these satirical devices in your paper, underline it.

Requirements:
  • Your paper file should be called: "Satire Paper Last Name" Share it with me on google drive. 
  • MLA formatting 10 pts
  • 2 quotations 10 pts
  • Works Cited page 10 pts
  • 2 full pages 5 pts
  • 3 satirical devices 15 pts
  • Spelling and grammar count 10 pts
  • Strong intro and conclusion 10 pts
  • If you use vocabulary words in your paper correctly, I'll give you an extra credit point per word.  Just bold your vocab words.
  • Due on Tuesday, July 30 at the end of the period.
  • 70 pts total
