Summer School Day 13

1) Finish reading "Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor.  It is shared in your google drive.  Open up your vocabulary list as well.

2) Answer the following questions from "A Good Man is Hard to Find." Open up a new document called, "Good Man Questions"

  1. What is the real reason that the grandmother doesn’t want to go to Florida?  What are some of the reasons she gives to change the family’s mind?
  2. What do the grandmother’s grandchildren think about her?  Give a quote that backs up your opinion?
  3. Who are the members of this family and how are they related?  Give names if you can.
  4. What does this description tell us about what the grandmother is most concerned with?
  5. The grandmother uses language that would have been considered as offensive then as it is now.  So far what is your opinion of this woman?  Give three reasons you feel the way you do. 
  6. In her story, who is the foolish boy and who is the good boy?  What made them so?
  7. In the grandmother’s estimation, what made Red Sammy a “good man?” 
  8. What does the grandmother do to manipulate her son?  Does it work?  Is this the first time the grandmother has been manipulative?  When has there been another time? 
  9. What is nostalgia?   How is grandmother being nostalgic?
  10. What does the grandmother’s decision say about her?  Was it the right decision?
  11. What do you think of the driver of the car?  What does his appearance say about him?
  12. Who is this man?  Who is “The Misfit?”
  13. What does Bailey say?  How does The Misfit react?  What is funny about this?
  14. Why does the grandmother call The Misfit a “good man?”  What evidence does she give to him to prove she is right?  What does it mean to be “common?”
  15. What is about to happen to Bailey and Bobby Lee? 
  16. Put into your own words what The Misfit’s father is saying about him.
  17. How many times has religion been mentioned in the story before this point?  Why does the grandmother bring it up now?
  18. Why doesn’t Crime matter to The Misfit?
  19. Does the mother know what is about to happen to her?  Why is she so polite? 
  20. Why does he call himself The Misfit?  Don’t just copy what he says down, explain it in your own words. 
  21. What is the only thing The Misfit gets pleasure in?
  22. What did the grandmother say to make The Misfit kill her?  Did The Misfit get pleasure in killing her?

3) Title a new google document, "PTSD Last Name" and share it with me.

By the end of the day, you should have completed your introduction and at least 2 body paragraphs. You must have a works cited page as well. Remember to incorporate at least 3 quotations. However, 3 quotations may not be enough to support all your information you are writing.

Veteran's Assignment:  You will be assigned a veteran.  Listen to their story and write a three page report on your assigned veteran.  Here are some of the questions you should answer in paper.
  • What is PTSD? Define and explain it for your readers.
  • Explain the history of PTSD
    • What are some examples of PTSD in the past?
    • What did they call PTSD in the past?
    • Where did the medical term PTSD come from?
  • Who is your veteran and what is he or she like?
  • Which war did he or she serve in?
  • How did the vet know he or she had PTSD?
  • Was this person treated? How was the treatment?
  • Are there any similarities or differences between Harold Krebs and your veteran?
Requirements:
  • MLA format (10 pts)
  • 3 full pages (10 pts)
  • 3 quotations in your paper (10 pts)
  • Works Cited page with at least 2 sources (10 pts)
  • Definition of PTSD with explanation (10 pts)
  • History of PTSD (10 pts)
  • Veteran analysis (20 pts) 
  • Reference to "A Soldier's Home" and Harold Krebs (10 pts)
  • Spelling and grammar (10 pts)
  • Due on Thursday, July 25 at the end of the day.
